TATTOO SERVICE AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS
You’ve just received a tattoo service from a licensed tattooist. It is up to you to take appropriate care of the tattoo during the healing period. If you have any questions or comments during the healing, please contact Newport Tattoo at (541) 264-8359 or contact your tattooist directly.
Regular Bandage:
Day 1: Remove bandage in 2 hours (do not re-bandage during the healing period). Wash with warm water and antibacterial soap. No ointment today.
Day 2-14: Wash 3 times a day. Apply a LIGHT AMOUNT of ointment after each wash. Start with a very thin layer of ointment, you can always add more, but too much will prevent the tattoo from healing properly and may result in pigment loss.
Day 15-30: Switch from ointment to any unscented lotion.
Clear Bandage:
Week 1: Leave bandage in place for 3-7 days. Remove while running warm water over it to help loosen the adhesive. Wash with antibacterial soap.
Week 2: Wash 3 times a day, using ointment after each wash for 1 week (see above for ointment).
Week 3-4: Switch from ointment to any unscented lotion.
RESTRICTIONS: Keep the tattoo away from animals, bodily fluids, chemicals, and other irritants until completely healed. Do not submerge in water (no pools, hot tubs, surfing, etc.) or expose the tattoo to direct sunlight/tanning beds for at least 2 weeks. Showering is fine but avoid letting water beat down directly on the tattoo.
DO NOT interfere with the tattoo at ANY point during the healing process to minimize the risk of scarring and loss of pigment. This includes picking, peeling, scratching or brushing off any flaky skin, scabs, etc. Skin does not heal within days, patience is required with healing.
POSSIBLE REACTIONS (during tattoo): Pain, tingling, lightheadedness, sweating, thirst. This is a normal reaction but be sure to let your tattooist know immediately if you feel dizzy/lightheaded or have tunnel vision.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS (after tattoo): Tenderness, tightness, itching, swelling, redness, bruising, heat. It is normal for a tattoo to be sore and bruised for several days. Ice and ibuprofen can help with swelling, redness, bruising, and pain. Be sure to put a clean cloth or paper towel between the ice and your skin. If you are in excessive pain or have severe bruising, contact the shop and/or your tattooist for further advice.
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS: Excessive alcohol use and/or use of blood thinners (Tylenol included) before and after the tattoo can increase bleeding, which may result in excessive bruising or scabbing. Infection or allergic reaction to pigments, ointments, and/or bandages is rare but can occur. If you notice excessive pain, redness spreading beyond the tattoo, blisters, seeping fluids, and/or pus, call the shop or your tattooist as soon as possible.
NOTE: Failure to follow aftercare instructions, such as picking scabs/flakes or using too much or too little ointment, will result in a fee for touch ups.
